This is a picture of our oldest daughter being baptized. Before I go on, it would be good to explain what baptism is for those who may not know. Baptism is the immersion of a believer (in Jesus) in water in the name of the Father, the Son,
and the Holy Spirit. Baptism is an act of obedience symbolizing the
believer’s faith in the crucified, buried, and risen Savior, as well as
the believer’s death to sin, burial of the old life, and resurrection to
walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus.
The thing that stands out to me about the picture is her reflection in the water. So why the reflection? What is so important or impressive about a reflection in the water? In reality there is nothing magical about the reflection. But I see it as a symbol of what baptism is all about. Baptism isn't what saves a soul, but rather it's a symbol of salvation. The reflection to me is a last look at her old self. Her lost soul. Her separation from God. Because once she accepted Jesus as her savior, all that went away. She is now child of God, forgiven of her sins and eternally united with Him. Praise be to God for his gift of salvation.
